Julius a friend of mine, works as a school teacher in one of the primary schools in town. He earns N8, 000 monthly which would not be paid when it was month end. And as usual my friend did not find it easy with that sum he earned because he was always broke in no time.
I spoke to him many times on starting a small business but he always complained of time and not knowing what business to delve into. Time continued to pass on, the standard of living continued to in crease and his salary had only the face value but could not meet his increasing needs.
As his rent expiration was coming close and of course the rent had been increased by 25% by his landlord. His frustration became more intense and he began to fret.
On the 2nd of January 2010 I walked into his apartment and we got talking, he expressed his growing financial inadequacy and how he was going to pay his rent that will expire in a short time and even if he collected his salary it would not be enough to clear the rent.
Something had to be done. I suggested to him starting a small business once again and he gave in. But his problem was capital. He said he would like to go into recharge card selling and making phone calls. The capital involved to start this business will be N10,000.
A business he could start with about N5, 000 was what he needed and after a little brainstorming we resolved he a started a black market of fuel.. This he could start conveniently with N5,000.
He swung to action that same day to gather the items he would use such as a table, a 25 litres keg, 1and 2 litre containers (one used in the saloons), a place he would be buying fuel from and a business space. At the end of that day he had already gathered the items he would require to start off. He promptly told me how he had gone and had already starting thinking of raising the initial capital.
But because he made a move, raising the capital was not difficult. He started the business and things really began to take place. He would go to school in the morning and resume in his business place after he closed from school. He did this with passion as he was able to raise money to meet immediate needs.
Now as write this article, he had paid off his rent and what he told me shocked me. A business that is not up to 2 months old has close to N10,000 owing him and he has started buying fuel in a second and a third keg. He is really doing well in that small business and he is living off the salary for now. That is to say the money he earns as a teacher is just an addition to his income.
My friend is already considering quitting his teaching job to face this business squarely and expand.
This is one business you too can embrace and get going on with something. If you don’t want to do the direct selling get someone to do that for you.
